Call for Papers: “Emotion, Feeling and Healing from Chinese Studies Perspectives” Special Issue

The December 2026 issue of Chinese Studies will be a special issue entitled “Emotion, Feeling and Healing from Chinese Studies Perspectives,” guest-edited by Professor Chen Hsiu-fen 陳秀芬 at the Department of History, National Chengchi University. Papers may be submitted in either Chinese or English and should respectively be 30,000 characters or 10,000 words or less (including footnotes). Form and style should follow the “Guide for Submissions to Chinese Studies” and the “Chinese Studies Stylesheet.”

Human emotion and feeling are innate as well as universal. As “sentient” beings (or homo sentiens), people communicate with one another and cross boundaries through emotion and feeling. Just as they may keep one afloat, they are as likely to cause one to capsize; excessive emotion and emotional imbalance often lead to individual distress, interpersonal tension, and even collective disorder. Regulating and having an outlet for emotion and feeling through various forms of external support and internal cultivation are invariably important in troubled times and a turbulent world, a matter which has always been a concern of the Sinosphere. This special issue invites scholars from a variety of disciplines, including—but not limited to—literature, history, philosophy, religious studies, and the history of medical science, to explore the topic of emotion and feeling, so as to consider paths of healing, therapy, and wellness, perhaps even providing guidance to those facing their own existential crises today.

The deadline for submissions to this issue is Feb. 28, 2026.
