Lectures on Global Chinese Studies – Ms. Sutherland and Ms. Mariavale’s Lectures

On Wednesday afternoon, August 14th, 2024, the Center for Chinese Studies (CCS) held two lectures which invited two speakers, respectively. Ms. Catherine Alexandra Sutherland (from SOAS University of London) and Ms. Axelle Mariavale (from Aix-Marseille University).

In the first lecture, hosted by Associate Professor Hsieh, Hsin-Chin (from National Taiwan University’s Graduate Institute of Taiwan Literature), Ms. Mariavale’s lecture topic is ‘Exploring Ecofeminism in Taiwan and its Application to Literary Criticism’. It explores the relationship between Taiwanese female poets and the natural world. She points out that Taiwanese female poets have potential and further research can start from religious care and Aboriginal faith viewpoints.

In the second lecture, hosted by Assistant Professor Chen, Pei-Jean (from National Cheng Chi University’s Graduate Institute of Taiwanese Literature), Ms. Sutherland’s lecture topic is ‘Queer/Feminist Community: Researching gender, sexuality, and feminism among Taipei’s queer community’. Ms. Sutherland shares her experience on how individuals in the community gain recognition and how feminism shapes social groups.
