Western missionaries have played an extremely important role in the encounter between Western and Eastern culture that has taken place in modern times, in areas ranging from scholarship, education, and medicine to cultural transmission. They have always had a great visible presence in our lives, working hard for people, and are worthy of our gratitude and emulation in every respect. The papers presented at this conference reveal the great love and concern Western missionaries have had for people as expressed in their words and essays.
