The Center for Chinese Studies and Fujen Catholic University’s Monumenta Serica Sinological Research Center Jointly Host Fujen University’s 1st Symposium on Missionary Sinology: “The Contribution of Missionary Sinology to the Knowledge of China and Taiwan.”

The Center for Chinese Studies and Fujen Catholic University’sMonumenta Serica Sinological Research Center jointly hosted Fu Jen University’s 1st Symposium on Missionary Sinology. The conference, held in the 2nd floor Conference room in Fujen University’s Paul Cardinal Shan Medical Building, convened at 9a.m on January 3, 2014, and was entitled “The Contribution of Missionary Sinology to the Knowledge of China and Taiwan.” NCL Director-General Tseng Shu-hsien said a few words at the opening ceremony.

Director-General Tseng remarked that both institutions have long been devoted to promoting academic activities and exchange both in Taiwan and overseas, and have worked together closely for many years with the aim of combining together research carried out by Chinese and foreign sinologists. It has been ten years since the partnership between the two research centers began in earnest, with Fujen University’s first international sinology conference held in September 2003.  This is of great significance from the perspective of long-standing models of cooperation between Taiwan’s academic institutions.

Western missionaries have played an extremely important role in the encounter between Western and Eastern culture that has taken place in modern times, in areas ranging from scholarship, education, and medicine to cultural transmission. They have always had a great visible presence in our lives, working hard for people, and are worthy of our gratitude and emulation in every respect. The papers presented at this conference reveal the great love and concern Western missionaries have had for people as expressed in their words and essays.
