“Taiwan Lectures on Chinese Studies” invites Professor Hua-Yuan Hsueh to deliver a lecture at The University of Tokyo

On July 1, 2019, the University of Tokyo in cooperation with the Center for Chinese Studies at the National Central Library hosted the fourth session of “Taiwan Lectures on Chinese Studies.” Hua-Yuan Hsueh, professor at the Department of History, National Chengchi University, was invited to the University’s Komaba Campus to present “From the Enforcement to the Lifting of Martial Law: The Implement of Transitional Justice and Human Rights in Taiwan.” This session is the third academic lecture put on by the Library and the University after agreeing to work in cooperation concerning the “Chinese Studies Information and Service Center” in 2016. The lecture was hosted by Shin Kawashima, professor, University of Tokyo. Yoshiko Kojo, professor and vice-head of the General Library, University of Tokyo, and Huang Guan-Chao, leader of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Representative Office in Japan’s Education Group, both attended and expressed both parties’ support for international academic exchange.

Those in attendance, ranging from the campuses of the University of Tokyo to other academic institutions interested in studies pertaining to Taiwan society and politics, were eager and active in discussions with Professor Hua-Yuan Hsueh, creating a lively session. Zhou Jun-Yu, current recipient of the Research Fellowship for Young Scientists, Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, was invited to be the session’s interpreter, and Ryuki Nitta, University of Tokyo, assisted in translating a number of materials. The Center was also present to show a video introducing the “Chinese Studies Information and Service Center” and to provide related information on the “Research Grant for Foreign Scholars in Chinese Studies” and the “MOFA Taiwan Scholarship” to encourage outstanding foreign students to apply and study abroad in Taiwan, furthering the ability of research being conducted in Taiwan.
