Abstract:

In the mid-1990s, members of the World Federation of Chu (Zhu) Family Associations (WFCA) publically promoted the “Zhuzi jiaxun” (“Zhu Xi’s Family Instructions”), which was first printed in the late Ming from a Zhu family genealogy. The WFCA has made the “Family Instructions” a centerpiece of the WFCA and increasingly projected the Family Instructions as a guide to self-cultivation and public ethics. Zhu Jieren, professor at the Institute for Classical Texts and director (now emeritus) of the press at East China Normal University in Shanghai has been particularly active in making the “Family Instructions” a focal point in his efforts to promote Zhu Xi culture. Moreover, by 2010 he championed the “Family Instructions” as China’s contribution to global values and began publishing translations of the “Family Instructions” by foreign scholars. How did the WFCA’s presentation of the “Family Instructions” progress from a family ethic through the 1990s, to an expression in 2002 of Chinese exemplary virtues from the “feudal” past that could still supplement Socialist ethics, and eventually by 2010 to be proclaimed as having international significance and serving as a Chinese contribution to global values? What does the case of “Zhu Xi’s Family Instructions” suggest about promoting Confucian values in modern international society?
